Vision: your PRD
Your Product Requirements Document (PRD) describes what your product is, who it's for and what it must do. Codalio writes it with you through conversation, and everything after it (the design, the prototype, the code and the tests) is built from it.
How the PRD gets written
- You describe your idea in the chat.
- Codalio asks questions. You can answer, pick a suggestion, write your own answer, or click Skip, let AI decide.
- A team of AI agents writes and updates the PRD sections as you go. After each turn, the chat tells you what changed, for example "Updated the PRD: Key Features, User Stories".
Not sure what to say? Use Give me suggestions for ideas, or Elaborate more to have the AI explain the question. Click Why we're asking under a question to see why it matters.
Scores: when is the PRD ready?
Four AI agents review different parts of your PRD and give each part a score out of 10:
| Agent | Looks at |
|---|---|
| Project Manager | The project overview: problem statement, target audience and key features. |
| Designer | Visual design, brand identity and user experience. |
| Architect | Technical architecture, data models and system requirements. |
| Product Manager | User stories and flows, success metrics, risks and acceptance criteria. |
If you turn on AI capabilities for your product, an AI Architect also reviews the AI design.
Hover an agent's icon to see its score and the reasoning behind it. Click it to keep the panel open and jump to the relevant PRD section.
When every score reaches 8 or higher, your PRD counts as complete. Keep answering the AI's questions to raise a low score. The more specific your answers, the faster scores rise.
Once you've shared enough, Codalio suggests moving on to the UI prototype. You don't have to: you can keep refining the PRD for as long as you like.
The PRD canvas
Click PRD Canvas to open your PRD next to the chat. It's split into Business Requirements and Technical Requirements, with a tab for each part:
| Tab | What's inside |
|---|---|
| Project Requirements | Elevator pitch, problem statement, solution, key features, phasing and user flows. |
| User Experience | Design principles, user personas, user journeys, sitemap and navigation. |
| Design Spec | Colours, fonts and screens for your prototype. See Design Spec. |
| Scope Estimation | Effort by role, story points and estimated cost by phase. |
| Market Sizing | Total, serviceable and obtainable market (TAM, SAM, SOM), assumptions and competitors. |
| Architecture Document | Data model diagrams and sample data tables. |
| AI Architecture | AI capabilities, integration pattern, data requirements and guardrails (when enabled). |
| User Stories | User stories with acceptance criteria. |
Long lists have a search box and pages, so you can find a persona, feature or story quickly.
Some content, such as the full list of user stories, all scope estimates and sample data, is only on paid plans. Free plans see a preview with an upgrade option.
Changing the PRD
Ask in the chat. For example:
- "Add a team admin role who can invite members."
- "Split checkout into its own phase."
- "Remove the social login feature."
The agents update the affected sections and show you what changed. While an edit is running, you'll see the agents' activity in the chat. Use Undo on an edit card to revert it.
AI capabilities
If your product could benefit from AI features, the AI Architecture tab offers Enable AI capabilities. The AI Architect then designs which AI features to include, how they connect to your app, what data they need, and the guardrails to keep them safe.
Versions
Save snapshots of your PRD so you can return to them.
- Click Save new version to save the current PRD as a named version.
- Open Version history to browse, rename and switch between saved versions.
You can't switch or save versions while the AI is working. Wait for it to finish first. PRD versions are available on the Plus and Premium plans.
Export
Click Export (with the canvas open) to download your PRD as:
| Format | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Sharing with stakeholders. | |
| HTML | Viewing in a browser or publishing. |
| JSON | Feeding into your own tools. |
| Cursor Instruction | Giving the Cursor AI editor your full requirements. |
| Windsurf Instruction | Giving the Windsurf AI editor your full requirements. |
Some formats need a subscription. To let a coding agent read your PRD directly instead of exporting it, see Connect a coding agent.
Next step
When your PRD is in good shape, continue to the Design Spec and UI prototype.
